German-Israeli Frontiers of the Humanities Symposium – GISFOH

In January 2009, the Academy signed an agreement with the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to collaborate on a series of multidisciplinary conferences for young scholars in the humanities. The annual conferences, held alternately in Israel and in Germany, involve about fifty young Israeli and German researchers from all fields of the humanities. Each year, four young Israeli scholars from various fields and four young German scholars from parallel fields are selected to serve on the organizing committee for the conference to be held that year.

The series aims to bring together outstanding young researchers from the two countries, to encourage the exchange of ideas across disciplines and national borders, to challenge the scholars to think and investigate beyond the confines of their particular field of knowledge, and to give them the opportunity to create connections, inspire each other and collaborate.

Prof. Margalit Finkelberg coordinates the project on behalf of the Academy.

The agreement signed between the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Israel Academy joins Israel with an elite group of countries: To date, the German foundation has signed similar agreements with the United States, Britain, Japan, China, India, Brazil and Turkey.

Under the agreement, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation established the Connect program, designed to support joint ventures by GISFOH conference participants. So far, 37 such projects have received support.
